Itaque Kasese is a town in Western Uganda lying North of Lk. George. it grew around the Copper mine at Kilembe where attention was later turned to Cobalt mining.
Kasese is the Chief town of Kasese District, and hosts the district headquarters and is also the largest town in the Rwenzururu Kingdom of Charles Mumbere the Rwenzururu King.
Kasese is also at the western end of the Uganda Railway from Kampala and Tororo and also has an Airport.
Its neare the Rwenzori Mts and Queen Elizabeth National park and is approximately 360Km by road West of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest City and 36km by road northeast of Mpondwe the town at the internatinal boarder between Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Kasese town is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Uganda. The reasons for this rapid population growth include: • Increased tourism - Kasese is the gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of the most popular in Uganda, and the Rwenzori National Park. • Kilembe Mines employs a large number of workers, when it is functional. • Hima Cement Factory is another big employer located in Hima, approximately 18 kilometres (11 mi), by road, north of Kasese. • Increased trade with the eastern districts of the DRC. Industry Kasese Cobalt Company Limited (KCCL), located on the road from Kasese to Rubirizi, south of the central business district of Kasese, extracts cobalt from the sludge left after copper is extracted from the raw ore for export.
